HandiWash: The van handwash unit for safer, hygienic work on the road

For many businesses, the workplace is a van travelling between jobs, a roadside maintenance vehicle, a utility vehicle at a remote location or a mobile workshop operating at a customer’s premises.

For workers who handle hazardous substances, oils, grease, chemicals, waste, food or contaminated materials, access to suitable hand-washing facilities is an important part of workplace hygiene and welfare.

But when there is no sink or welfare facility nearby, how can businesses provide workers with convenient access to hand washing?

The Eberspächer HandiWash provides a practical answer. Designed specifically for vehicle installation, the Van Handwash Unit provides hot and cold running water directly from a 12V or 24V work vehicle.

What are the UK requirements for workplace hand-washing facilities?

UK health and safety legislation places responsibilities on employers to provide suitable welfare facilities for workers.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 apply to most workplaces and set requirements for suitable and sufficient welfare facilities. HSE guidance states that workplace washing facilities should include hot and cold, or warm, running water, suitable cleaning agents such as soap, and a means of drying hands.

For construction work, separate requirements apply under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM). HSE states that everyone working on a construction site must have access to suitable welfare facilities, including washing facilities.

The important point for mobile businesses is accessibility. Facilities need to be available where workers can reasonably access them when required. HSE guidance for construction specifically advises considering the distance from the furthest part of a site to the nearest facilities and how long it takes workers to reach them.

For businesses operating from vehicles, this creates a practical challenge. A worker may be several miles from a depot or fixed welfare facility and still need to wash their hands during the working day.

This is where a vehicle hand wash unit can provide a practical solution.

Why road maintenance and remote work need mobile hand-washing facilities?

Road maintenance and highway work are particularly strong examples of where mobile hand-washing facilities can be useful.

Workers involved in road repair, highway maintenance, traffic management, civil engineering, utility repairs and roadside assistance can spend much of their working day at temporary or constantly changing locations.

HSE specifically recognises highway utility and repair work as an example of temporary work where suitable welfare arrangements need to be considered. For remote and mobile workers, welfare facilities should consider the work duration, distance from existing facilities, and exposure to hazardous substances.

A Van Handwash Unit installed in the work vehicle ensures hand-washing facilities are always available on the move.

Why hot and cold running water matters?

HSE guidance for workplace welfare and construction environments specifies washing facilities with clean hot and cold, or warm, running water, together with suitable cleaning materials and a means of drying hands.

For construction sites, HSE states that washbasins should have clean hot and cold, or warm, running water and be large enough to allow workers to wash their hands, face and forearms. If mains water is unavailable, water supplied from a tank may be used.

This makes the integrated heating system one of the key features of HandiWash.

The Eberspächer HandiWash uses a low-power, heavy-duty heater element to provide hot water up to 60°C. The temperature is thermostatically controlled, and the system incorporates a thermal overload safety device. Combined with cold water, this provides hot and cold running water directly from the vehicle.

Why hand sanitiser isn’t always enough?

Hand sanitiser can be useful when washing facilities are temporarily unavailable, but it is not a replacement for proper hand washing.

HSE guidance notes that sanitiser-only setups are inadequate where proper washing facilities are not nearby, especially when dealing with visible dirt, grease or hazardous substances. Proper hand washing with running water and cleaning agents is more effective for removing contamination.

What is the Eberspächer HandiWash?

The Eberspächer HandiWash offers a compact Van Handwash Unit designed specifically for vehicle installation. It runs on either a 12V or 24V vehicle electrical system.

The fixed in-vehicle unit holds 8.5 litres of water and uses vertical mounting to save valuable space. It suits commercial vans and specialist vehicles with limited available space.

HandiWash measures approximately 300mm W x 520mm H x 230mm D. The unit reaches around 405mm deep when you lower the basin for use. Its compact design suits various professional vehicles with a suitable installation point and compatible electrical system.
