Why extruded tracer colour matters in automotive thinwall cable?

Why extruded tracer colour matters in automotive thinwall cable

Not all tracer colours are created equal. For contractors, installers, and project managers, the choice between UK-manufactured cable with tracer colour built into the insulation by extrusion and a cheaper import with painted-on tracer colour can make a big difference in both installation quality and long-term performance.

In the automotive world, wiring faces constant vibration, heat, moisture, and handling. Here, the difference between built-in tracers and painted-on tracers isn’t just cosmetic. It is vital to performance, safety, and reliability over the lifetime of the vehicle.

At AES, we don’t leave wiring quality to chance. We only supply UK-manufactured Thinwall cable with tracer colour permanently built into the insulation, never the painted-on alternative that fades, scratches, and fails when it matters most.

What Is Tracer Colour in Automotive Cable?

Tracer colours are the stripes or markings on cable insulation that make it easy to identify circuits quickly. In complex vehicle wiring looms, they are essential for accurate installation, fast diagnostics, and compliance with wiring diagrams.

Thinwall cable, lightweight, flexible, and with a high temperature rating, has become standard in modern vehicles. But not all Thinwall cable is made the same, and the tracer colour application method is where quality shows.

The Painted-On Problem: Why Cheap Imports Fail

Imported Thinwall cable often uses painted-on tracer stripes applied after the insulation is formed. It might look similar at first glance, but the drawbacks become obvious quickly:

  • Scratches off easily when pulled through bulkhead grommets or clips.
  • Fades fast when exposed to oil, coolant, or UV light.
  • Risk of misidentification when the stripe disappears, leading to wiring mistakes and wasted troubleshooting time.

For automotive applications where accuracy and durability are vital, painted-on tracers are a liability.

The Extrusion Advantage: Colour That’s Part of the Cable

UK-manufactured Thinwall cable with extruded tracer colour integrates the colour into the insulation during manufacturing. This means:

  • The colour is part of the PVC itself, not just a surface coating.
  • It will not flake, peel, or rub away during installation or use.
  • The tracer remains bright and visible even after years of heat cycles, abrasion, and exposure to fluids.

This process requires precision equipment and strict quality control, standards AES insists on for every cable we supply.

Why Built-In Colour Wins in Vehicles

Withstands Harsh Conditions

Extruded tracer colour withstands constant flexing, engine bay heat, and the abrasive movement of wiring looms, while remaining easily identifiable over time.

Reduces Maintenance Errors

Tracer remains readable years later, ensuring engineers can carry out repairs or modifications more quickly, with greater ease and improved safety.

Meets Professional Standards

UK-made Thinwall cable is manufactured to stringent automotive specifications, delivering dependable performance and enhanced reliability.

Cost-Effective in the Long Run

While painted-on tracer cable is cheaper to buy, the extra labour, downtime, and risk it introduces make it more expensive over the life of the vehicle.

How to Tell the Difference

If you’re unsure whether a cable has an extruded tracer or a painted stripe, there are a few simple checks you can carry out in the workshop.

  • Scratch Test – Lightly scrape the stripe with a fingernail. If it disappears, it is painted-on.
  • Cut and Inspect – In extruded tracer cable, the colour runs through the insulation layer, not just the surface.
  • Feel the Surface – Painted tracers can feel raised or uneven, while extruded tracers are perfectly smooth.

Is Your Thinwall Cable Compliant?

A single-colour cable that has been manufactured, tested, and approved to meet the required standard remains compliant in its original form. However, if an additional material such as paint or ink is applied to the cable surface to create a tracer marking, the cable becomes a modified product and would require further testing to confirm compliance under ISO6722 and ISO19642. This includes undergoing ageing process tests, as well as durability, abrasion, and solvent resistance tests to ensure the added tracer remains reliable throughout the cable’s service life.

Cables manufactured with an extruded tracer colour do not require additional retesting, provided the tracer is made from the same material compound as the main cable insulation and is formed as an integral part of the cable during the manufacturing process. As the tracer becomes part of the complete cable construction, it maintains the original performance characteristics and remains compliant with the relevant standard.

AMC, the Manufacturing Partner Behind AES Thinwall Cable

At AES, we have strict policies when it comes to compliance. Our current cable manufacturer extrudes all tracer colours during the initial cable manufacturing process, giving us confidence that all our cables, with or without tracer colours, are fully tested and compliant with the required standards.

This means our customers receive cable that is:

  • Durable in extreme conditions
  • Reliable throughout the life of the vehicle
  • Easy to install, identify, and maintain, even years later
